Final Data Protection Thoughts - Check Your Exposure

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

Protecting data requires attention, knowledge, and awareness.  As discussed, multi-layered security policies and procedures are designed to keep data safe.  Companies play a big role, but so do you.  The purpose of this blog is help you understand what you can do:

  • Lock the Front Door – The easiest way for someone to access information is for you to let them in.  Lock your computer and your phone and have them auto-lock after a certain amount of time.  Make sure your devices require passwords to open them.

  • Stay the King of Your Castle – Make passwords long and vary them from site to site.  If a hacker were to obtain your password, chances are good they’ll try that same password on other sites.  Two things to remember… length = strength and variation is key.

  • Don’t Take the Bait – Phishing is a scam designed to trick you into providing personal data.  Scammers are good at posing as a person you know or an institution you do business with. Don’t let them lure you in.

  • Don’t Let “Free” Cost You – Don’t let “free” public WiFi cost you.  WiFi hot spots that don’t require a password are likely not secure and any data accessed is as good as gone.  Instead use your data plan.  It costs less than a data breach.

  • System Stewardship – Reduce security vulnerabilities by keeping your systems up to date with the latest patches and software updates.  Avoid using portable media, such as USBs, if possible.  Make sure your data is backed up on a predetermined schedule.  Protect documents with sensitive information and shred them as soon as possible.

Safeguarding data is not a one-time task, but an ongoing effort.  Stay vigilant.  The best defense is a good offense.  And remember, if something looks suspicious, be suspicious.
