Quarterly Employee Challenges

We've always been a goal-oriented and outcome driven organization. In early 2011, we tried something new and issued a challenge to our employees. For one day, employees had to avoid routine and mundane tasks. Instead, they should work on a project of their choosing, with a team of their choosing and in the manner and timeframe of their liking. The only requirement was to report back in the next day with what they chose to do and the outcome.
This exercise was inspired by Drive, by Daniel H. Pink, and his notion that we are more creative and engaged when we can pick what we work on, when, how we work on it, and with whom. The energy in the office that day was palpable. People were focused on creating new products and services, on making current things better, and on simple housekeeping tasks that are often left for “when there is time”. From that point forward, every quarter, Benelogic picked a specific day and continued this exercise.
After a couple years, Benelogic realized that although employees wanted to participate in the Challenge Day, daily tasks did not always afford someone the time to participate on a particular day. In 2014, the program shifted to its iteration today. Now, employees are offered a corporate challenge to complete over the course of quarter. If met, the employees earn rewards collectively deemed valuable and important. Working on these challenges together gives employees an “us” opportunity which helps solidify teamwork. These challenges shift in focus and duration. Some challenges are targeted, while others are more open-ended. Each challenge aligns with a cornerstone of Benelogic’s culture – dedication to personal development, professional development, and community involvement. These challenges are about accountability and teamwork. They remind us that rewards are earned. Teamwork moves us collectively forward. Challenges allow us to grow as individuals, as teams, and as a company.
By creating opportunities that employees might not be able to individually find time to do outside of the workplace, they are able to satisfy their charitable urges. They can put focus on improving their health and well-being. They can further develop themselves professionally and give back to the community in ways they might not be able to achieve otherwise.
